At Studio CHY, we are committed to actively engaging with the wider architectural profession and supporting conversations that shape a more sustainable and responsible built environment. In collaboration with the Royal Institute of British Architects Gloucestershire branch, we helped support and organise a recent event that brought these ideas to the forefront.
RIBA Gloucestershire hosted a thought-provoking and thoroughly enjoyable talk by Duncan Baker-Brown, focusing on the urgent need to rethink how we design and construct through smarter material reuse and circular economy principles.
Drawing from his influential book The Re-Use Atlas: A Designer's Guide Towards a Circular Economy, Duncan explored how adaptive reuse and resource efficiency must play a central role in the future of architecture. His talk highlighted how these approaches can significantly reduce waste, lower embodied carbon, and challenge the industry to move away from unnecessary demolition and new-build dependency.
It was also particularly insightful to hear about his campaign for RIBA President, where he champions a more responsible and forward-thinking direction for the profession. His vision for a RIBA that places its members at the centre of the conversation—highlighting their needs, expertise, and challenges—was very well received by Gloucestershire members in attendance.
The discussion strongly resonated with our own approach at Studio CHY. It reinforced the importance of collaboration, shared knowledge, and collective responsibility within the profession. It is encouraging to see the energy within the RIBA network being directed toward meaningful change, and it is exciting to consider how that collective momentum can help shape the future of architecture.
